Amethyst has become popular, fine stones of a
rich royal purple colour, free from inclusions, have become quite expensive. Though
Brazil and Africa, particularly Zambia, seem to contain limitless supplies of amethyst,
only a small amount of the material taken out of the ground is suitable for jewellery and
only a tiny fraction of this is of the finest quality. Out of the facetable material
only a small proportion would be of the finest quality. It can be appreciated,
therefore, why a fine amethyst can never be bought cleaply; and if it remains in fashion
over the next few years fine specimens with inevitably become even more expensive than
they already are.
