Samson Jewellery - Birth Stone
March / Aquamarine

Aquamarine is one of the most highly prized o fthe beryls.  The color of aquamarine may vary from pale blue to a rich and deep blue or blue-green.  A lovely blue color may also be produced by heating some greenish-yellow beryl.  In ancient times beryls "the color of the sea" were considered the most desirable, but today's fashion demands the deeper and bluer stones.  These are in great demand internationally.  The price of fine aquamarine has risen steadily in recent years and prices of hundreds of dollars per carat are not uncommon.

Ver subtle differences in shade and depth of color accompany radical differences in cost.  Extensive familiarity with beryls and experience in handing aquamarine is needed to accurately apraise beryl the greater is its value.

The principal localities for aquamarine are Brazil (especially the state of Minas Gerais), Namibia, India, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the Malagasay Republic and Russia.   There are many U.S. localities for blue beryl, but few of these have gem significance.
