Blue topaz is relatively common, and colourless topaz is the most common form of all.  Sea-green stones, similare to aquamarine before it is heat-treated, are found in Russia but are relatively rare.

It have become one of the most popular and widely sold of all gemstones.  Gamma-ray treatment leaves the topaz slightly radioactive, so the material is stored after treatment until safe.  The industry is now regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
