GA Gemmologica Association of Great Britain and Ireland.
GIA Gemological Institute of America.
Geode A boulder, usually spherical, containing agate and often crystalline quartz
Gilding metal A base metal alloy usually containing copper and zinc from which jewellery is fashioned and then gilded.
Gilt A thin layer of gold applied to base metal, nowadays usually in an electrolytic bath.

Triple pendant ear-rings.
Girdle The edge of the circumference of a gemstone that divides the table from the pavilion.
Gold-filled An American term used to describe rolled gold.
Gold plating A gold skin applied to base metal, often used to imply a better quality than gilt.
Grain The unit of size used for measuring pearls.   A grain is equivalent to a quarter of a carat, or 0.05 gram.  Cultured pearls are usually measured in millimetres.
Granulation Decoration consisting of tiny balls of metal for which the Etruscan jewellers were famous.
Guard ring A ring worn on top of a more valuable ring to prevent its loss.
Gypsy ring A wide gold ring with a single diamond deeply embedded in it.  The stone is often made the centre of an engraved star.

Heat-treatment Many gemstones are heat-treated to improve or alter their colour.  The colour change is usually but not invariably permanent.
